Benito Juárez (1806-1872) is a national hero in Mexico. Ha was the son of poor Zapotec Indian farmers in the state of Oaxaca. Mexico. At age thirteen he couldn´t read, write. or speak Spanish. He trained to become a priest, but later interesed in social justice, especially the rights of native peoples. He was very popular among the native Indian population. In 1847, he was elected governor of Oaxaca.
